The Alice Buffett Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes the achievements of skilled and dedicated educators in the Omaha Public Schools (OPS). Given to 15 teachers annually, the Award has recognized and rewarded nearly 300 teachers over the past two decades.

The Award’s namesake, Alice Buffett, taught Home Economics to students at Omaha Central High School and Benson High School. The aunt of Omaha investor Warren Buffett, Alice Buffett profoundly influenced the lives and minds of generations of children in Omaha for more than 35 years with her passionate and caring approach to learning and her students.

The Award seeks to reward teachers who:

  • Instill in students a desire to learn and achieve
  • Understand the individual needs of students and encourage their talents 
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of their individual subject matter and possess the ability to share it effectively with students
